Haha, okay I thought I could do this in a day. I shared my hopes and dreams with my family, they laughed. Supportively. Then I realized it would take about 3 days. 2 weeks later, we finished. HUGE credit to hubs for his patience, mom for her painting and babysitting help, and bro Jake for just knowing how to do everything. Seriously, even how to start a business selling hammocks.
15 easy steps (give or take, I probably missed like 9 steps):
- Pretend you can do things (this is the secret to everything).
- Look at a gajillion tutorials on pinterest, youtube, google, etc.
- Decide which methods will work for you, and follow those tutorials.
- Get rid of your stupid fluorescent default kitchen lights. Seriously. Do it. It’s easy, ask youtube. Have your bro install a new beautiful hanging light.
- Have your bro take out the 735 pound cast iron sink and throw it in the backyard so you can make a mud kitchen in your backyard. One day.
- Move stove to an awkward place in your house, like the living room.
- Tape off your floor and walls.
- Remove the cabinet doors and drawers.
- Open your windows to blow sawdust and fumes out. Cry when your power bill is $200 because you kept the A/C running while you opened the windows.
- Sand everything.
- Prime everything.
- Paint everything with cool sponges and random paint colors.
- Polyurethane coat everything. Or just some things.
- Have bro put in a new granite composite sink. OOOOoooo love this!
- Celebrate.
It’s been about a month since we finished this, and it’s mostly holding up! Wish I would have:
- Used oil primer on the cabinets.
- Sanded the cabinets better.
But the counters with oil primer and poly are durable!! We’re loving it! Well, I am, and hubs either loves it, or pretends to. I’ll take it. 🙂 Here are in-process pics:
